The first question I typically ask our guests is, what is the big problem your company is solving? Every company is out there solving some problem in the world. I would love to hear from your perspective what problem your company’s solving and perhaps you by extension.

Basically, I need to give you a little perspective on what the company is and who I am, as some of our audience members may not know about it. I appreciate Kryterion’s readiness to delve into discussions around applications and implications of artificial intelligence. AI stands as perhaps the most undervalued and excessively used buzzword in today’s world. The idea behind using AI is as equally thrilling as it is daunting. While I personally advocate for using AI responsibly, many uncertainties prompt debates. However, the genie is out of the bottle and is making significant impacts, whether we are prepared for it or not. Some estimates suggest that AI could contribute more than $15 trillion to the global economy by 2030, which is right around the corner. So, I contend that rather than being left behind, it is wiser to embrace this wave of change and become an active participant.

With that, I am Trushant Mehta, the Co-founder and CTO of OpenEyes Technologies. Open Eyes specializes in providing solutions to clients in certifications, credentialing, membership, and nonprofit associations. We are certified under ISO 9001 for quality and 27001 for Information Security Management Systems. We are also active members of several industry groups like ATP, ICEA, SAE, and the Northern Virginia Technology Council. Last year, we were recognized as one of the top 50 custom technology product development companies in the Washington, DC area by Inc 50. About 16 months ago, I was personally honored to receive a lifetime achievement award from the office of U.S. President Joe Biden. Most recently, my patent on interactive query-based network communication through a media device was granted. So yes, I am all in when it comes to AI.

Some clients focus on streamlining and enhancing decision-making processes across various industries through AI. How do you harness AI to analyze large datasets more efficiently and effectively than traditional methods?

We focus on harnessing AI to analyze large datasets more efficiently and effectively than traditional methods. This enables quicker and more informed decisions based on actionable insights. This not only improves accuracy but also significantly reduces the time and resources associated with complex data analysis and management tasks. So, we mainly focus on that.

As follow-up question to this incredible summary of your work in AI is, where did it all begin for you? When did you decide this was the direction you wanted to take?

Good question. It was four years ago when I was in India, doing volunteer work with a school in a rural area. I realized that the kids there lacked the funding to open a school or even a place to learn. I started thinking about how we could leverage technology to help. At that time, AI wasn’t on my mind, but I considered how technology could connect them with the world. I spoke with Amazon and Google, as we are partnered with them, and asked for 500 Echo devices and Google Home devices. They gave me 100, which I distributed across a few schools to connect them with the rest of the world. That’s when I realized the potential of voice-over technologies and AI. This led to my patent on creating questions on the fly. That’s how I got into AI 3.5 years ago, although I had been following it for the last 10 years. Since then, I decided to go all in on AI, despite the pros and cons.

What about the training process with AI? How do you train yourself and others to get into the AI space?

There are self-taught methods and industry partners and leaders who come to us for training. Our team participates in these trainings. Additionally, we focus on training our customers. Just using AI in our platform isn’t enough; customers need to understand how to use it, the pros and cons, and the legal aspects. Training is critical, especially in our industry. The effectiveness and success of any certification program depend not just on the technology but also on the proficiency and confidence of the users interacting with it. Proper training equips customers with the necessary skills to utilize our platform efficiently and effectively, minimizing errors, increasing productivity, and leading to better outcomes for both organizations and individuals. We also ensure continuous improvements and updates, evolving every three to six months.

How does AI ultimately help with customer outcomes? What role does it play in improving the customer experience?

AI helps reduce support costs and improve customer satisfaction by enabling quicker and more informed decision-making. Well-trained users are less likely to encounter problems requiring technical support, reducing the burden on our support team. Additionally, we continuously gather valuable feedback to improve our AI models. In the context of certifications and credentialing, proper training ensures the integrity of the certification process. For example, users well-versed in AI-driven proctoring tools can better monitor and uphold the standards required for high-stakes examinations. This preserves the credibility and trustworthiness of the certifications issued.

What future trends and advice do you have for people in the AI space?

The rise of AI is set to transform industries in profound ways. As we look to the future, several key trends are emerging. Firstly, we anticipate a significant increase in the automation of administrative tasks. AI will continue to streamline processes such as application review, credential verifications, and the management of continuing education requirements. This automation reduces the administrative burden on organizations and speeds up the credentialing process, providing a more efficient experience for both administrators and candidates.

Another major trend is the enhancement of personalized learning experiences. AI-driven systems can analyze data from previous touchpoints to understand individual learning styles, strengths, and weaknesses. This analysis allows for the creation of customized learning pathways that adapt in real-time to a learner’s progress. For instance, if a candidate struggles with a particular concept, the system can automatically recommend additional resources or alternative approaches to help them master the material. This level of personalization enhances learning outcomes and better prepares candidates for their assessments.

AI is also poised to revitalize the assessment process itself. Traditional testing methods often fall short in measuring a candidate’s true capabilities. With AI, we can develop more sophisticated adaptive assessments that adjust in difficulty based on the candidate’s responses. This ensures a more accurate evaluation of their skills and knowledge. The integration of AI in any platform will lead to more insightful analytics and reports. Certification bodies will be able to leverage AI to gain deeper insights into candidate performance, program effectiveness, and industry trends. This helps with curriculum updates and new program developments.
